Rise and Shine – and eggs “sunny-side up”.

riseshine2New Year’s Day and who really feels like cooking breakfast? We have a local restaurant in Waterloo, Ontario where we like to indulge in great big breakfasts of eggs any-style, turkey sausage (we don’t eat meat), home fries, baked beans, toast – wheat, rye or grain, waffles, pancakes, french toast (don’t worry, we don’t eat everything on the menu!). My favourite is called “La salsa and eggs”. It’s a tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, guacamole, cheddar cheese and served with a side of homemade salsa. It is heaven on a plate!

So, yesterday we were filled with the anticipation of a fantastic New Year’s Day Brekkie at our little restaurant – it’s quite popular to locals (always busy), but hasn’t caught on so there’s line-ups or anything, but much to our dismay, the “Rise and Shine” was not answering any phone calls of inquiry.

Undaunted, we hopped in the Mini, picked up my mother and headed up towards the restaurant, just in case. Sadly, the doors were shut and the “CLOSED” sign was hanging from the glass. We were all sad.

The one interesting thing about this little jaunt, was that as we drove along, I thought of the charming children’s song from my childhood, entitled, “Rise and Shine” (also know as the “Arky, Arky song”, apparently).

Here it is sung by some boisterous teens having a great time (followed by lyrics below), so you may all enjoy and sing along.

Happy New Year!

By the way, we did find a place for breakfast, but it couldn’t hold a candle to the “Rise and Shine”.

Rise and Shine (The Arky Arky song)

Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Children of the Lord

The Lord said to Noah:
There’s gonna be a floody, floody
The Lord said to Noah:
There’s gonna be a floody, floody
Get those children out of the muddy, muddy
Children of the Lord

So Noah
He built him, he built him an arky, arky
Noah
He built him, he built him an arky, arky
Built it out of gopher barky, barky
Children of the Lord

The animals, the animals,
They came in by twosie, twosies
The animals, the animals,
They came in by twosie, twosies
Elephants and kangaroosie, roosies
Children of the Lord

It rained and poured
For forty daysie, daysies
It rained and poured
For forty daysie, daysies
Nearly drove those animals crazy, crazies,
Children of the Lord

The sun came out and
dried up the landy landy
The sun came out and
dried up the landy landy
Everything was fine and dandy, dandy
Children of the Lord

Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Children of the Lord

The animals they came off
They came off by three-sies three-sies
Animals they came off
They came off by three-sies three-sies
Grizzly bears and chimpanzee-sies zee-sies
Children of the Lord

Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Children of the Lord.

That is the end of,
The end of my story, story
That is the end of,
The end of my story, story
Everything is hunky dory, dory
Children of the Lord

Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Children of the Lord

  1. Kat, oh yes ! I rember this song. How funny that somewhere do far away, children sing the same songs. I did not learn this song until my children went to Sunday School, and I never knew all the verses.

You brought back a sweet memory! Take care and have a happy blessed New Year. His Child

  2. I remember the “Arky” song from childhood, too! We sang it in Bible School every summer at our Baptist church.
